  • College Awareness Day 1/11/18

    Thursday 1/11/18 is College Awareness Day at PS/IS48!  All students and staff members are encouraged to wear their favorite college shirts and/or gear!

  • School is OPEN on Friday 1/5/18

    NYC public schools will be OPEN tomorrow, January 5, 2018.

    All field trips requiring yellow school buses will be cancelled. All other programs and activities will be held as scheduled.

    Tomorrow’s weather is expected to be very cold and windy, with a high temperature of 17°F (not factoring in the wind chill). The roads will be icy and slippery. Please make sure the students are dressed accordingly, be patient, and use caution when walking or driving.

  • School Closed Due to Snow 1/4/18

    Due to the impending winter storm, all NYC Public Schools will be CLOSED on Thursday 1/4/18.  Additionally, all NYCID, COMPASS, SONYC, Afterschool clubs and sporting events will also be cancelled.  Stay home, stay safe, stay warm!

  • Winter Holiday Camp

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

    This year, NYCID is offering a Winter Holiday Camp from December 26th to December 29th. The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with early drop-off and late pick-up options available. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

  • December News

    December is a very busy month around PS/IS 48! Here are some highlights of the main events happening around our school this month…

     

    • December 8th, School Spirit Gear (including noise makers, finger foam hands, hand clappers, school spirit hands, and lion lollipops) will be on sale outside the Gymnasium before the 4 p.m. basketball game. All proceeds will go to support our PS/IS 48 basketball teams.
    • December 15th is our annual $1 PJ Day. Everyone is encouraged to wear their PJs to school and donate $1 to help raise funds for Pietrosfight and Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) Awareness… Also, thank you to everyone who participated in “Wear Purple to School” on November 29th. Together, PS/IS 48 & P373 students and staff raised $315 which were donated to the Bella Lisa Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.
    • The PTA received another disbursement of $85.23 from AmazonSmile, for the 3rd Quarter of 2017. Up to date, the AmazonSmile Foundation has donated $328.59 to our PTA. So whenever you’re shopping on Amazon, please remember to support the PTA and help raise some extra funds for our school by using our 48’s AmazonSmile link.
    • Join us for our December’s Family Fun Night – Holiday Crafts and Painting on December 15th at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the cafeteria (flyer attached). This is a free event, limited to the first 150 people to send in their response. All forms (one per family) are due back to Mrs. Guthrie by December 14th. Pizza and refreshments will be served. As a special treat this year, the PTA will be raffling off a new 14” Acer Laptop ($5/ticket) during the event! The 8th grade will also be selling holiday lollipops, pens, pencils, and duckies to raise funds towards their events. We look forward to seeing you there!
    • Students who had remaining balances on their MySchoolBucks account, will be receiving a refund from the DOE. A check will be mailed to the student’s parent/guardian at the home address on file at the school. Please contact the office by December 15th and update your address if there was a change in your home address since the last time you provided it to the school.
    • NYCID’s After School Clubs – Winter 2018 session – will begin January 2nd, 2018 and run for 10 weeks. Registration is now open online and the deadline to register is December 20th by 12 a.m. See the attached flyer for more details.
    • December 22nd, is our annual Ugly Sweater Day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their ugliest holiday sweater to school. Show your holiday spirit, be creative, and have fun (just remember that all sweaters must be school-appropriate).
    • December 25th to January 1st, school will be closed for Winter Recess. Classes will resume again on January 2nd. We wish all our PS/IS 48 families, students, and staff a Wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year!

    School updates:

     

    • This holiday season, if shopping online on Amazon, don’t forget to use do so through 48’s AmazonSmile link. It’s an easy and effortless way to support the PTA and help raise some extra funds for our school. For more information on how to use AmazonSmile, visit our PTA page and click on ‘Support PS/IS 48’.
    • November 29th is $1 Wear Purple to School to support the fight against Pancreatic Cancer. Funds raised will go to the Bella Lisa Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, a Staten Island non-profit organization dedicated to providing awareness as well as support to those diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
    • PS/IS 48 Cheerleading Team is selling bows – which sold out during Parent-Teacher Conferences – to raise funds for their upcoming season. If interested in purchasing any of the bows, complete the attached Bows Fundraiser Order Form and send it (along with CASH payment) to Ms. Maloy’s attention by November 30th. Bows will be delivered to classrooms the week of December 4th.
    • Our Annual Holiday Fair will be held during school hours, from December 5th to 7th (prices range from $1 to $7). The PTA needs volunteers for the event – if anyone is interested in helping, please let us know via email, or by filling out our online volunteer sign-up form.
    • 8th grade classes are hosting a Candy Cane Gram Fundraiser. If interested in purchasing a Candy Cane Gram for $1, please fill out the attached form and send it back to your child's homeroom teacher by December 8th. Form must be used to place orders; there will be no sales during lunch periods. All grams will be delivered the week of December 18th.
    • December 15th is $1 PJ Day. All students and staff are encouraged to wear their PJs to school and donate $1. Proceeds will go to support the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).  
    • December’s Family Fun Night (Holiday Crafts) will be held on December 15th in the cafeteria at 7 p.m to 9 p.m. (more info to follow)
    • December 22nd, 48’s Ugly Sweater Day for students and staff. Don’t forget to have fun and be creative!
     
    General information:

     

    • November 25thStaten Island Challenger Flag Football will be hosting its Annual Turkey Bowl at Monsignor Farrell High School from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event supports children with special needs while showcasing their athletic abilities.
    • November 25thDSNY’s Leaves Collection continues. To participate, place leaves in paper lawn & leaf bags, and set them out on the curb after 4 p.m. 
    • November 28th, Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Council will host a Special Education Seminar at NYS Institute for Basic Research. To register or for more info, call 718-226-6670 or email ddobrin@northwell.edu.
    • December 12th, Borough President James Oddo and the New York Blood Center will host a Blood Drive at Borough Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
    • December 17thBreakfast & Bowling with Santa at Rab's Country Lanes. Tickets are $20/person, including breakfast buffet, photo with Santa, shoe rental, and 1 hour of bowling.
    • December 17thBrunch with Santa at Grand Oaks Country Club. Tickets are $42/adult, $25/child under 10, and children under 3 are free. For more info, call 718-356-2771

  • Parent - Teacher Conferences 11/16

    Just a reminder:  Parent - Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday 11/16/17 from 12:20-2:20 p.m. & 5:00-8:00 p.m.  Please attend during your scheduled time (form grades PreK-4) or sign in as first come basis (Atlas Academy).  Students will be dismissed at 11:20.  All NYCID, SONYC, COMPASS and Clubs are cancelled for the day.

The PTA has an open door policy, so please feel free to come and visit and speak with someone on getting involved in upcoming events.  Parents are always welcome to come in anytime to speak to or help the Executive Board Members. There is always something going on and we are very appreciative of any assistance. We can also schedule a meeting at a time that is convenient for you.

Box Tops For Education: Please send in all Box Tops! Every box top is worth 10 cents. What a wonderful way to raise funds for the school and the children can help too!

Stop & Shop: Use your Stop & Shop card & link it to PS 48 to raise funds every time you shop! Simply link your card by going to their “Tools for Schools” page on their website & enter our school’s ID # 15728 & a percentage of your total will be donated back to PS 48!

Ink Cartridge Collection: We are still collecting old ink cartridges (no large cartridges please) that can be submitted for additional funding for the school.

PTA Meetings

  

Each month, we conduct monthly PTA meetings.  These meetings are scheduled for the 2nd Wednesday of each month, at 7:30 p.m.  This is a great way to get involved & be kept up to date on school information.

Our Principal, Ms. O’Donnell & Parent Coordinator, Ms. Terry Guthrie, will be attending every PTA meeting & present a report on upcoming events in the school. During the meeting, “Student of the Month” awards are distributed.

We are happy to announce that once again, Applebee's will be providing free kid meals & Panera Breads will give a free cookie certificate to all of the Students of the Month. Please extend your gratitude to these establishments the next time that you are there. We hope to see you all at the PTA Meetings!

Parent Meetings

 

 Each month we have a Parent Meeting during the morning.  These meeting will take place at 8:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month.  If you miss a PTA meeting & would like to catch up, you may attend this meeting – all are welcome.

We request that all Class Parents & Committee Members also attend these monthly meetings. A great way to get involved is to become a class parent in your child’s class.  Check with your child’s teacher to see if your class has a class parent, many teachers will allow more than one class parent.  The class parent assists the teacher with parties & special activities for the class.

Please feel free to bring any ideas, suggestions, concerns or compliments to these meetings to help us better represent the views of our parent community!
